Thank you for being one of our first families. This guide walks you through everything you need to get Tendwell up and running for your loved one.

Set up the tablet

Tendwell works on any tablet with a web browser — an iPad, Android tablet, or even an old phone with a decent screen. No app to install.

Find a tablet (any iPad, Android tablet, or Fire tablet works) Make sure it connects to Wi-Fi Plug it in near where your parent spends time (kitchen table, living room) Turn screen brightness up and auto-lock off (so it stays on)

💡 Tip: A $50 Amazon Fire tablet works perfectly. Place it where your parent naturally sits — Tendwell should feel like it's just "there."

Open Tendwell on the tablet

Open the browser on the tablet and go to your Tendwell companion page. Bookmark it or add it to the home screen so your parent can reach it with one tap.

Important: Add Tendwell to the Home Screen first. This makes it open like a real app and keeps permissions working smoothly.

On iPad / iPhone:
1. Open Safari and go to app.tendwell.ai
2. Tap the Share button (the square with an arrow at the bottom of the screen)
3. Scroll down and tap "Add to Home Screen"
4. Tap "Add" in the top right
5. Close Safari and open Tendwell from the new icon on the Home Screen

On Android / Fire Tablet:
1. Open Chrome or Silk Browser and go to app.tendwell.ai
2. Tap the ⋮ Menu (three dots in the top right)
3. Tap "Add to Home screen"
4. Tap "Add"
5. Close the browser and open Tendwell from the new icon on the Home Screen

When Tendwell opens for the first time, it will ask for two things:

Your parent's first name — so Tendwell can greet them personally.

Your family code — from your approval email. This connects the companion to your family's dashboard so you can see conversation summaries.

Tendwell will also ask for microphone and location permissions — tap "Allow" for both. The microphone lets your parent talk to Tendwell by voice. The location lets Tendwell mention the weather naturally in conversation (e.g., "Bundle up, it's chilly out there today!").

Open the companion link in Safari (iPad) or Chrome (Android) Add Tendwell to the Home Screen Open Tendwell from the Home Screen icon Enter your parent's first name Enter your family code Allow microphone access when prompted Allow location access when prompted Test that the microphone works — try saying "Hello!"

Set up your Family Dashboard

The Family Dashboard is where you'll see summaries of your parent's conversations, mood flags, and check-in history. It's your window into how they're doing.

Enter the same family code you used in Step 2. Then register with your name and email so you can receive alerts.

Go to the dashboard link on your phone Enter your family code Register with your name and email Invite other family members (optional)

⚠️ Keep your family code private — anyone with it can view your parent's conversation summaries.

Introduce Tendwell to your parent

This is the most important step. The first conversation sets the tone. Here's what we've learned from our interviews about what works best:

      🗣️ What to say: "Mom, I got you this little helper that you can talk to anytime. It can remind you about your medicine, tell you stories, or just chat. Try saying hello!"
    

Don't oversell it or make it seem medical. Position it as a friendly companion, not a monitoring device. Tendwell is warm and patient — it'll adapt to your parent's pace.

Introduce Tendwell casually — don't make it a big event Sit with them for the first conversation Let them know it's okay to just say "goodbye" when they're done Check the dashboard the next day to see how it went

Radar sensor setup (coming soon)

Your free radar sensor kit will be shipped once they're ready. When it arrives, setup takes about 5 minutes — just peel and stick. We'll send separate instructions with the kit.

📦 Radar sensors are being finalized for beta families. You'll get an email when yours ships. Voice conversations work great in the meantime!

Don't worry if your parent is hesitant at first — that's completely normal. Tendwell is designed to be patient and non-pushy. Most seniors warm up within a few days.
